Even if you have owned a pool for years, it’s worthwhile to spend a little time during pool season reviewing safety. Drowning is a very real risk. Taking the time to verify you have the appropriate equipment and follow safety guidelines could save a life.

Equipment Check

Verify you have the correct rescue equipment adjacent to the pool. Every pool should have a life-preserver. A rescue hook is also a good idea. Check the status of the rescue equipment to make sure it doesn't need replacement this year. In addition to rescue equipment, check that ladders and diving boards are still in good condition. Look for loose parts that need tightening.

You hope that your friends will not be injured when they come over for a swim. If something unfortunate happens, you want to be sure you are not negligent for having faulty equipment. Your home liability insurance helps cover medical treatment if a friend is injured.

Slippery Surfaces

It’s not possible to make the surfaces surrounding a pool completely slip-free, but make sure diving boards and deck surfaces are non-skid. In addition, emphasize a no running rule. The water from the pool will make a non-skid surface slippery, so the only way to limit the likelihood of a slip and fall injury is to make sure everyone walks near the pool.

As a pool owner, you need to make sure an enclosed fence prevents animals or uninvited guests from gaining access. The fence should be over four feet high and must completely surround the pool. Check that your fence is still in good condition by walking completely around the perimeter. Make sure you don't have anything nearby that a kid can use to climb over the fence. The gate should be self-closing and the lock should be out of reach of children. Consider using a pool cover when no one is swimming.

It may be hard to believe, but you can be held responsible if someone gains access to your pool without permission and is then injured. By completely and effectively fencing in your pool, you will reduce the risk of this.

Ensure that this swimming season is safe by checking equipment and fencing when using your pool. Check your level of liability insurance protection to make sure it is adequate. Keep in mind that level of insurance will depend on the kind of pool you have, whether or not it includes slides or a diving board and what kind of protections you have in place.
